Cheap Snowboarding

the number one tip i learned is NEVER EVER NEVER EVER wear cotton! Cotton though is soft and warn absorbed sweat and moister making you feel gross and sticky.

Im buying myself a pair this year.

For under the jacket I wear a long sleeve shirt and my north face sweat shirt(40$ on sale)

the NUMBER 1 thing you really need to worry about is your face and hands. hand warmers are the best things, falling in the snow could give you frost bite/ Ice burns. For your face wear goggles and face mask and a little sun screen going fast down a slope is freezing and can start to hurt… And of course get a beanie( its a knitted hat)

Most all of the outerwear you acquire will be waterproof. You don’t need a waterproof jacket all of the time, but you do need waterproof pants.

When purchasing a snowboard, make sure you take into account your height and weight. If you researched the mountain and know they are going to get fresh snow footage, (and hopefully this is what you’ll be riding the majority of your snowboard career), then go for a bigger board. If the mountain consists of mostly groomers and park features, then pick up a smaller size. Typically for beginners, I measure up the board to their body.. get something that stands up to just below your nose.

Burton has some really reliable boards, and they have a better selection for people who are just beginning the sport. They have been around, and are a trusted brand. Always get a warranty with your new boards though! No matter what! Go for something with a centered stance.. so you can feel comfortable while you figure yourself out up there. You won’t be feeling off balance. –

Make sure when you dress for snow you wear layers. The weather changes constantly in the mountains, and can go from sunny and warm to feezing and windy. Make sure you invest in some first layers. Do not buy anything cotton! If you sweat, it will absorb your sweat and make you colder. Go for polyester or the new Dry Ride tech which wicks away sweat to keep you warm and dry. Go for a midweight.. they are the best option. Dakine has some awesome first layers, as well as Burton.

Make sure you get some good socks from a reputable snow company! Nothing too thick, you don’t want too tight of a fit on your boots. Unless your boots are too big. (Your big toe should barely touch the front of the boot while standing in it.)

After the first layers, put a t-shirt on over that. Then pick your favorite hoodie, nothing too big and wide. You want to keep it slim so you don’t feel like a whale out there when you try to bend over and strap yourself into your bindings. Volcom has some amazing Hydrophobic hoodies which have the same factors as Dry Ride, it’s a combination of materials put together to wick away your sweat to keep you dry. They are also waterproof.. which is a nice thing to have as far as hoodies go.

Next.. grab a light to midweight waterproof outerwear jacket and pants. http://www.HoldenOuterwear.com has some really sweet gear. Their jackets cover your butt when you sit down.. it’s legit. Volcom also has some really cool pieces, some of their jackets zip to your pants in the back so if you eat it on pow days you won’t get any snow up your back.

You will need a good pair of gloves. Don’t get anything too warm for the weather or too thin.. get something in between. No pipe gloves and no fleece lined leather gloves. Grenade, Burton and Dakine all have some good gloves.

Make sure to get a beanie and goggles!
With goggles, the safest bet is to get a pair with some amber lenses. They’re not too dark and not too light. So if it’s sunny, you’re safe, and if the clouds roll over and all visibility is lost.. you can still see!

Always carry a pocket tool on you, and make sure to have a map of the mountain!

Advice on the basics of learning to snowboard..

First off, don’t focus on one thing in particular.. you will lose feeling and sight of all the other important factors. Use your body as a whole.

Just relax, bend at your knees (not at your waist). Pretend your knees are your personal shock obsorbers. When you hit a bump let them suck up the bounce. Whatever you do, do not straighten out your legs, it looks weird and will do you no good.

Keep your upper body (shoulders) facing forward down the hill. Put your front hand out infront of you, point it where you want to go, and follow it!
Remember that where ever you look is where you’re going! So if you turn your head, chances are the rest of your body will go that way.

Get comfortable staying centered on the board and going straight, it’s easier to learn your heel-side carves first, so apply pressure to your back foot and heels allowing your board to swing around in front of you, apply the pressure and stop.

Practice gaining speed and stopping on your heels.
You will slide out on your butt here and there, but that’s part of the learning process!

Next you MUST learn how to carve and stop on your toes. By doing this, you ride straight, flatten out your board then focus on putting the pressure on your front foot and your toes. Your back foot will slowly come around. The best way to come out of this is to move your front foot so you are now applying heel pressure, then slowly follow along with your back foot. It’s all about finding the flow. Everything is constant heel-toe pressure. Just feel for it.

Remember, becoming a successful snowboarder takes time and persistency. Don’t get frusterated, think of why you’re there.. to simply enjoy the mountain and the atmosphere!

well if you’re renting, then you don’t have to worry about boots, bindings and a board. but you will need a waterproof jacket and pants. if you don’t want to spend alot, just go to whatever sporting goods store is around, and buy last year’s, or go talk to a friend around the same size you know that snowboards frequently, ask if they have an extra jacket or pants and see if you can borrow it from them, or if you can just pay ‘em fifty dollars for it.
next, lets cover your head. you will probably need a tuque or beanie, but if it is your first time a helmet is recommended. you can rent a helmet alongside your board, and i would strongly recommend goggles. if its snowing where you are, they are a necessity. also if its sunny it helps with the reflection of the sun.
for your face a bandanna which covers from your nose to your chest is really good to protect from wind burn, and sun burn.
you’ll need to layer under your jacket, i suggest wearing a tank top, then a long sleeve tee, then another tee, then a hoody, then your jacket. bring an extra hoody since you’ll probably be on your butt a lot. but make sure its loose so you can move around in it.
under your pants, you won’t want to wear jeans. you’ll need a pair of long johns, and then maybe a pair of pajama pants if you are going to be really cold. and maybe you can find a pair of padded shorts to help with falling and they are pretty warm too.
for your feet, you’ll want a really nice pair of socks, probably wool, that go halfway to your knees.
for gloves, wear mittens. they allow your fingers to pass warmth to eachother. also the really tight cotton gloves you can get for really cheap are good to wear underneath your mittens.
