Early winter skiing through the Thanksgiving holidays can be a challenge. For example, I called Stratton Mountain Vermont to confirm their opening on Thanksgiving when reading their webpage offering fireworks and lifts performing in celebration on opening day. The reception desk confirmed that they would open. They spoke falsehood. It did not open and there was absolutely no fireworks.

Though Stratton did open the next date, conditions and runs offered were limited. Only skilled and intermediate trails were accessible. Next door Bromley ski resort was not slated to open till the first week in December.

Killington ski resort situated in north Vermon boasts world class ski and snowboarding terrain and will be the largest resort in eastern North America. It regularly ranks as the #1 resort inside the Northeast for both groomed trails and terrain parks for skiing and snowboarding. It has 750 acres with 2 gondolas and 7 express chairs to accommodate the over 71 miles of diverse terrain and trails at the 13 skiing and snowboarding places. They boast of 1,400 snow guns that cover 71% with the total acreage. The summit is 4,214 feet high with a base elevation of 1,615 feet.

Killington had a limited trails open for for the Thanksgiving weekend. The green trails on the Great Northern were open and wonderful. However, the problems with most of the interconnecting trails where that they were half way iced over probably caused by problems with artificial snow making equipment. The conditions were terrible for anyone bringing a beginner to experience skiing and long lift lines for access to Killington Peak via K-1 Express Gondola, the highest lift in Vermont.

Interestingly, Vermont has a 9% sales tax on lodging, restaurant meals, and 10% on alcoholic beverages and if that is not enough, certain municipalities may impose a local option tax on rooms and meals. These sales taxes must severely hurt business located on the borders of the state and further discourage those on a tight budget from visiting.

For instance, Brattleboro VT in Windham County, is the largest town close to the Stratton Mountains ski area and the likeliest place to find nearby lodging. Brattleboro imposes a 1% sales tax above the statewide sales tax. Interestingly, nearby New Hampshire has no sales tax or even a state income tax on individual’s W-2 wages. Even New York state is more friendly with a 4% state sales tax. While you can buy snowboard and ski gear without the tax, eating out is another story

The ski areas in New York state are more convenient to the heavyier population areas of Eastern U.S. and generally do not open until later in the winter season with the possible exception of Whiteface Mountain, Hunter, Belleayre, Plattekill and those who have invested in an array of snow guns. New York has over 50 ski areas. As a state, it has the most ski areas of any state in America because of the Catskill mountains which are the highest peaks of the Adirondack mountain chain.

Wrist Guards

Don’t skimp on cheap solid wrist guards as these can do more damage than good. It is worth spending a bit of money on professional wrist guards that have a bit of flexibility. The problem with solid plastic wrist guards they will transfer all the shock to where the guard finishes up your arm or further up to you elbow. If you opt for a guard with flexibility but also enough solid support this will be a lot safer and distribute the shock evenly. Don’t forget to buy a pair of gloves that fit over them.

Impact Shorts

These padded shorts come with padding around the thigh and hip area and the all important coccyx (tail bone) protector. The coccyx protector stops the shock of a fall travelling up your spine. When you have a pair of these on and you fall backwards, it is surprising how little you feel, even on hard snow. This makes it less temping to put your hands down and possibly breaking your wrist.

Goggles

You can either buy two pairs of goggles or two lenses depending on what you prefer. You will need one pair for bright light and another for dark foggy conditions. It is surprising how much the light can change on the mountain day to day.

Snowboard Clothing

For most first time snowboarders the first holiday is always a massive hit to the bank balance even if you end up renting a board the cost of clothing can add up. If you want to do it on a shoestring you can pick up cheap snowboard jackets during the summer months before the winter season starts.

Cheap Snowboard Clothing

Browse end of season sales for cheap snowboard clothing. Watch out for brands such as Quiksilver Clothing, Volcom, North Face and Bonfire. If you don’t mind settled for last season’s technology and styles this is a great way to save a few pennies and spend longer on the slopes.

Okay so two friends and I are interested in some skiing in France this Winter. We are however two seventeen year olds and a sixteen year old, so we are somewhat on a tight budget.

We figured to minimise cost, we could just take about two tons of blankets and a tent (to eliminate hotel fees), go for just a couple of days and try to walk as much as possible and make do with what we get. After all, the experience would be just as worthwhile even if we got no skiing done, we would still have the memory of our trip to France together.

Now comes the reality of the idea; we would obviously need to spend some money not only in getting from Exeter to France, but also on renting some skiing/snowboarding equipment. And a lift pass too, I guess.

My question to you guys: would this be possible? Would we really be able to grab a cheap flight to France, set up a tent somewhere, and then hike to the nearest lodge and rent some gear and ski there?

I know absolutely nothing about the subject, so any links and/or reccomendations would be GREATLY appreciated.

Whether we like to admit it or not, all riders do care about convenience. Somehow many snowboarders have seemed to convince themselves that products designed around convenience are lame and unnecessary. Some hate on Flow bindings, others hate on boa boots. However, we can all remember the day we first began riding, and I think most of us can agree that we needed all the help we could get. We didn’t need to be screwing around with our equipment, or getting frustrated because everyone had to wait up while we strapped into our bindings. We simply needed to focus on the goal at hand, successfully making it down the mountain without eating it every couple of feet.

Luckily, Burton has finally come out with their take on the convenience binding. The Burton Freestyle On-Up binding may have a strap that looks similar to Flow, but it functions similar to a strap binding. There actually is no reason to decide not to learn to snowboard.. There are plenty of benefits in learning to snowboard and your health and fitness are certainly one of the important ones. So why do I suggest you should learn to snowboard? Well, I will ask you one question – do you really get enjoyment in going to the fitness center? I know some people who love going to the work out center plus they are happy to go each day. However, for the rest of us, that just isn’t the situation.

I am really pleased that I decided to learn to snowboard. I have no regrets whatsover. The winter can be described as a quiet season and it was always so simple to spend lots of time inside, watching films on the TV or DVD or on my computer. Admittedly it was fun, however, it was lousy for my fitness and health. I do know that when it is cold you actually don’t want to go out, but if you just take the initiative to learn to snowboard, I believe you just won’t want to stay inside anymore if there is snow outside. You will be surprised how easy it really is to master snowboarding and it is actually really not as difficult to learn as skiing, plus the youngsters today actually feel that skiing is for old people anyway.

One hour of snowboarding can help you burn up to 700 calories. If you learn to snowboard and decide to turn it into a regular thing, you will be constantly burning off lots of calories as well as having a wonderful time. Of course, the fact that you are burning calories is just one benefit. All exercise releases endorphins, which are the chemicals within your body related to good feelings, which means by doing all this snowboarding you are less suceptible to depression.

I have discovered that one of the main reasons I find that people decide they don’t want to learn to snowboard is the expense involved, as snowboarding equipment can be very expensive. Well, if you think about it for a moment, if you don’t learn to snowboard and spend the entire winter season in your house just how much are you going to spend on DVDs and on all that food you are going to be eating while watching the film? Going to the movie is also not cheap. We all know that we don’t go and see a movie and just buy the tickets, there is always the temptation to get goodies such as drink and popcorn. If you are an Xbox fan, you are aware of the cost of the Xbox games.

Sure, , but once you own all your equipment, you won’t need to buy further gear for some time. It will only be when you have attained a certain skill level that you might want to start looking at a new board or other new equipment.

Now that you have no more excuses why don’t you just arrange your first snowboarding lesson? Go on, learn to snowboard!
