Avoiding Common Snowboarding Injuries

July 11th, 2010 — 6:50am

Snowboarding is a fun sport to undertake but it has its risks that you need to be aware of. Nothing would suck more that returning from a snowboarding trip with a broken leg or sprained wrist. There are a number of broad safety measures you can follow to diminish your danger of a snowboarding injury that we will discuss.

Make sure you’re in shape to ski. Organize for your winter sports trip with a training programmed to progress core stability and muscle. Endurance and leg strength is predominantly vital to lend a hand in preventing injuries.

Wear suitable layers of clothing, that don’t confine your movement. You do not want to be all bulked up and unable to move freely. If you cannot move then you cannot snowboard properly and the entire thrill aspect is gone.

Just like any other sporting activity, warm up and cool down. Before you hit the slopes take some time warming up and stretching to help train your body for action.

The top injury that a majority of the snowboarders receive is a wrist injury. Falls are more frequent during snowboarding. The natural response to a fall is to stretch out a hand to break the fall, and falls tend to occur more often in beginners. For this reason Colles fractures Scaphoid and fractures of the wrist are a relatively common feature, with around 100,000 wrist fractures worldwide among snowboarders each year. Snowboarders should wear wrist guards as they significantly reduce the incidence of wrist injuries during falls. Another common injury is head injuries which can lead to serious conclusions. Helmets are effective in reducing the incidence of minor concussions during low velocity collisions. Be sure to grab both of these when you do your shopping for snowboarding.

You may think this will save you money, but in the end it may cost u thousands in hospital bills. Don’t borrow equipment from friends; it significantly increases your risk of injury. If you are hiring equipment make sure you hire from a recommended store. Ensure that all the equipment fits properly. This will help avoid serious injuries and unnecessary falls due to non fitting equipment.

Another good tip is Use ‘multi-mode’ release bindings if possible. The superior release available in modern bindings is just one factor that has helped prevent injuries. Rear release boots can significantly reduce the risk of ACL injury.

Self-test your bindings every day. Self testing of bindings is simple. Step into the binding and then twist to the side to release the toe-piece under the control mechanism. The heel can be tested by stepping into the binding and leaning forward, to release the heel-piece. Both the toe and heel should be able to release if properly adjusted.

The Final Suggestion is to follow the FIS Rules for Conduct in Winter Sports.

1. Respect for others

A skier or snowboarder must behave in such a way that he does not endanger or prejudice others.

2. Control of speed and skiing or snowboarding

A skier or snowboarder must move in control. He must adapt his speed and manner of skiing or snowboarding to his personal ability and to the prevailing conditions of terrain, snow and weather as well as to the density of traffic.

3. Choice of route

A skier or snowboarder coming from behind must choose his route in such a way that he does not endanger skiers or snowboarders ahead.

4. Overtaking

A skier or snowboarder may overtake another skier or snowboarder above or below and to the right or to the left provided that he leaves enough space for the overtaken skier or snowboarder to make any voluntary or involuntary movement.

5. Entering, starting and moving upwards

A skier or snowboarder entering a marked run, starting again after stopping or moving upwards on the slopes must look up and down the slopes that he can do so without endangering himself or others.

6. Stopping on the piste

Unless it is absolutely necessary, a skier or snowboarder must avoid stopping on the piste in narrow places or where visibility is restricted. After a fall in such a place, a skier or snowboarder must move clear of the piste as soon as possible.

7. Climbing and descending on foot

A skier or snowboarder either climbing or descending on foot must keep to the side of the piste.

8. Respect for signs and markings

A skier or snowboarder must respect all signs and markings.

9. Assistance

At accidents, every skier or snowboarder is duty bound to assist.

10. Identification

Every skier or snowboarder and witness, whether a responsible party or not, must exchange names and addresses following an accident.

With all these tips that have been shared with you, I hope you learned something and will have a very safe trip. Come home in one piece and start planning the next.

July 8th, 2010 — 12:30pm

Join the email list and get coupons that don’t get you deals but steals! Visit Chicks Who Carve, snowboard women’s and get everything you need for the whole season from snowboards to jackets to wax. Now hit the slopes….

What size board do you intending on buying or what size board do you own? Do you just get any board based on how cool it looks? I hope not. I wouldn’t think you’d go out and get a board that’s two feet over your head nor a board thats below your waste, am I right? You already know some type of range that is reasonable but did you know that even a few inches will make a huge difference and for some experts just a few millimeters means either have a good day of shredding or a not so good one…

First of all, you need to know a little bit about yourself, you need to know what’s comfortable and reasonable. Another great idea is to know a little bit about how a snowboard is designed and it’s aerodynamics. I would suggest doing just a tiny bit of further research and just looking at the basics of how a snowboard is designed. It might really help you on selecting a board and what style board would work for you. There are three major skill level: beginner, intermediate and advanced/expert. All levels may require a different type, style and size board. The length of your board is so important! It can’t be stressed enough, because if you have the wrong size then it’ll be you who will be stressin’ on the mountain. We don’t want that, now do we?

If you have a long board, thats fine! We’re talking about a longer board than you need, thats not always the best….If its too long, than it will be so much harder to turn and carve, not too mention stopping. Oh my! It will be a learning curve to go over jumps again because the board might be heavier and it will be lengthier. On the plus side it is a tad bit more stable, but the point isn’t to be stable all your snowboarding life. The point of it is too fall, learn from it and get back up.

If your board is too short, your weight might be too much for it and your board might get out of control. You literally might spin out of control. If its not incredibly short but still short it will be much easier to turn, spin, jump and control but you still may not have total control of the board at times.

Some people actually prefer slightly shorter or longer boards, its a personal preference. *TIP*– Try renting boards before you buy a new one or your first one.  Its worth the money to rent and find a length that you enjoy and can handle before you buy one that may not work…at all.

Boards just don’t go by length, they go by level, weight, style, design, flexibility, material, price and width. Yes, width is another great contributing factor. Have you ever tried snowboarding on a ski? Maybe but I don’t think it works out to good. Huh? If your boots hang off your board too much, you may be in some trouble. Your boots will get stuck in the snow and it will be hard to carve and turn as your toes will dig into the snow. If you’re a heavier person, getting a wider board will benefit you also. *TIP*–If you already own a board and your boots hang off a little more than you like, try adjusting the angle of your boots.

*TIP*–Usually the more expensive the board, the higher quality. Don’t get the cheap ones just because of their price. Usually for a little more money, the board you’ll get will go the extra mile for you.

So What’s My Size?

The size of your board depends on your height and weight. Most people depend just on your weight but it should be around your nose in height also. Snowboards go by centimeters. It really depends on feel and there’s no definite answer. All I can say is that YOU NEED to make sure it is the right size for you, check out some sizing charts or even a snowboard calculator (they help, they put all kinds of factors into it so you can get a good size board).

So in Conclusion:

-  Snowboards depend on weight and height and its important to talk to a professional to get the right size for you

-  If a board is too tall or too short, snowboarding won’t be in your favor.

-  If you just want to ride down the mountain with some speed, a tad bit longer board would be best.

-  A tad bit shorter board will be best if you want to do tricks.

-  Get a wider board if you have big feet or if you are a heavier person.

-  Get the right size so instead of falling down the mountain you can carve down it with ease!!

Thanks for reading, we hope you know now that getting the right size is so important. I wouldn’t use my kid sisters’ board. But at the same time since it is a sport that involves much exposure to the snow the garments selected should be water proof and warm so you might enjoy the game to the fullest without discomfort due to the cold.

Make sure you wear warm, comfortable clothing. Snowboarders spend a good amount of time sitting on the ground, so waterproof snowboard pants are a must . You might also want to hire a helmet and wrist guards, if at all possible, to attenuate the chance of injury on your first day.

The best way to select this is to see if the board when standing straight up touches your chin.
If you’re a beginner it is the most advisable thing to hire a board and boots. When you’re finished with your lessons and find that you may be able to work by yourself, then you could try a little bit of tricks to enliven the game. You can try Ollie which is a method of leaping into the air while going down a slope.
Safety measures are of much seriousness, particularly with the clothes that you select for the sport and more so the head and wrist gears like gloves and helmets which are vital to the riders.

Learning to Snowboard – The Basics Explained

July 2nd, 2010 — 9:48pm

You can learn the basics of snowboarding within a couple of days, but there are enough challenges, techniques, and styles to keep you interested for years.

The main snowboarding styles are alpine, freestyle and freeride. Freeride snowboarding involves riding down the face of a mountain, whilst taking in its natural bumps and curves. Freestyle focuses on tricks, such as spins, jumps and grabbing the board in mid-air. Snowboarding alpine style is not unlike skiing, as it emphasizes building up speed and making sharp turns. For those unsure of which style is best for them, starting withe freeride is advisable, as it is the easiest to pick up the basics of the sport with.

There are two different stances snowboarding stances that can be adopted. In the regular stance, which is most popular, your left foot goes first. In the goofy stance, the right foot goes in front of the left. Your instructor will show you both early on whilst showing you how to snowboard and it is totally up to you as to which one you make your primary stance.

Unlike skiers, who shift their weight from side to side, snowboarders must shift their weight between their heel and their toe. The technique is more like surfing or skateboarding than skiing. When you shift your weight forward, you will go downhill and pick up more speed. When you shift your weight backward, you will slow down. By digging your heels down, the edge of the snowboard drags in the snow and causes you to stop.

There are three different types of snowboards available: freeride, freestyle, and alpine boards. Each is manufactured uniquely in relation to size, shape and materials. The best board for you is dependent on your favored style of snowboarding, your height (when standing on end, the board should reach between your nose and chin), your shoe size and your weight.

Snowboard boots and bindings are necessary to connect yourself safely, securely and comfortably to your snowboard. The higher the quality of the ones you get, and the more they fit your personal specifications, the easier it will be to control your board.

You should dress in layers, with a three-layer system generally seen as the best: an outer later, a middle layer, and a base layer. Warmth, weight and moisture management being considered for each of those layers.

Your head and ears can be protected from extremely low temperatures with a comfortable hat or beanie and, over that, wear a snowboard helmet. Wear goggles to protect your eyes from UV rays, snow, wind, ice, and tree branches. Opt for gloves which are waterproof, durable, and have a fleece or other synthetic-based insulated lining.

You should borrow or rent clothing and equipment prior to buying any to ensure that not only do you like the sport, but that you also get items tailored towards the style of snowboarding that you will mostly be participating in. Equipment and clothing is not cheap, so making the right choices first time around is important.

Snowboarding at My Local Slope

June 30th, 2010 — 2:43am

My local ski slope is quite a fun place to hang out for me and my teenage friends. We find that it’s a good way to keep ourselves amused. You see in my local area when you are under 21 their really is nothing else to do. You see me and my friends can’t go out drinking and nor do we have any particular desire to hang out at the local tennis court, that is why we were looking for something to do that was knew, exciting and more suited to our need for extreme entertainment!

So we went down the local ski slope and asked some questions about what kind of thing goes on and basically tried to get a grasp for how much it was going to cost to get started. The lady was really helpful and seemed to be really encouraging. She explained that we would not need a snowboard, snowboarding boots or even snowboarding skills to get started. We were really pleased to here it, so basically asked if we just went on the slope or if we needed some kind of tuition first. The lady explained that we would definitely need some kind of tuition first, and explained that for $15 an hour we could get a group lesson. This was kind of what we were looking for, as the idea was to do this as a group and we felt that if we all done it together It would be more of a laugh. So we basically booked a lesson, and the lady explained that we had to pay a deposit because the slope had to arrange it with the instructor. She explained that we would get lessons for around 5-10 hours and then she thought that we would be good enough to come down the slope on our own and try things out. This was the kind of thing that I was looking to do, because we wanted more than merely to learn. We wanted to pick up the basic skills that were required and then come down on our own and have a laugh at the slope.

So we went to the lessons and they worked out great. They were really fun for everyone involved. It turned out that it wasn’t just us at the lessons, but the other girls and boys who went to the lessons were all really easy to get on with and everyone got on well. Nobody had been to snowboarding lessons before so we were all kind of in the same boat so to speak. The teacher went over really basic stuff at first, and to be honest I did not pay too much attention because I was more concerned with actually going out their and starting to ski for real. The guy who was our teacher was really approachable and that just made it so much easier for everyone. We were able to ask all the questions we wanted, and he seemed to pick up when someone was having problems and when we understood things. He then explained after around 30 min’s that we were ready to hit the slopes, and you can be sure that we were ready, I was practically desperate to hit the slopes and get started. At first, he asked us to go down the beginner slope which is basically a slope that is for people who are just starting to learn. The gradient is much less and that makes it so much easier to get going, because if you build up to much speed and you do not know how to stop then that could cause real problems for a beginner.

Snowboard Jackets

June 27th, 2010 — 7:39am

For anyone who has looked at a snowboarder before and contemplated just how straightforward it likely is to stand on a board and go down a mountain, you’ve never done it. Snowboarding is not simply about standing on a waxed board and sliding thru snow. It might be if you’re still on the bunny slopes, but at a certain point, it becomes more complicated. For those newbies out there, a quick rundown of the fundamentals of simply standing on your snowboard will suffice for showing you how even stance can be tricky.
Come visit us right here for more info on Snowboard Jackets. We are the greatest source of info on Snowboarding today.
http://snowboardingbindings.org

When you first start out in snowboarding you’ve got to make the basic call of how you would like to stand. You can’t simply hop on and hope for the best. In simple language you can’t select.
There are 2 basic ways to stand on a snowboard. The first of these is to put your left foot forward. Known as a regular stance, this is the most common system as the majority are right handed and feel more relaxed like this.
However there’s also a nerdy stance in which your right foot is put forward. Though this is less common, some people feel they must board in this style, as it is more comfortable.

For those with any experience on a board, be it skate boarding or surfing, you probably already know precisely which style works best for you. Don’t assume right off that if you’re nerdy on a skateboard, you will be spotty on a snowboard though.

You may not consider it immediately, but any time you do something with your feet you’re likely putting one foot forward before the other. By practicing in some everyday activities you can figure out which foot that is and use it while snowboarding. Methods for deciding might include riding your cycle and seeing how your feet rest when coasting or comparing which foot you step off with in basketball or soccer. Anything that displays your foot preference is helpful here.
Another thing many of us don’t understand is they have to set the width of their own stance. Instead, you have to select the proper width and adjust your bindings appropriately.

Regularly this will fall between ten and 30 degrees, but you check to ensure that the angle you have is snug for you. Try it out a few times and adjust as required.

Finally, just remember not to copy someone else’s position. Yours is unique and will feel right to you. Snowboarding is a great out of doors sport that can be made even better if you take the time to make sure that you are comfortable on your board.

Need Help Finding A Discount Snowboard?

June 24th, 2010 — 12:42pm

Shops selling discount snowboard have reasons why they sell their products at a low price. Some shops have a standard to follow in operating costs, which is mostly set to a minimum. They operate on a high volume and low margin model.

Also, these stores have exclusive business relationships with top international manufacturers and distributors worldwide, and hence, they get access to the special wholesale deals. In turn, they provided discounted deals in their products, such as cheap Snowboard Gear.

Despite its cheap cost, this gear is brand new and 100% genuine. Some sellers even provide warranty. A shop that exclusively deals with sports equipment, gear and sportswear can provide discount boards from top brands such as GNU, LIB Tech, Salomon, Scott, Lamar and Force.

Other brands that have reasonable prices include Rossignol, K2, Burton, Ocean and Earth, LTD, Indigo, Smiths, Spy and Slims. All products are mostly covered against factory defects for 12 months, at minimum.

Now, another reason why snow boards and other sports gear are sold at discounted price is Sale events. Shops, whether on the web or in a mortar-and-brick world, may host Sale events like clearance and closure. There are also Sale events in celebration of an occasion or season.

A clearance sale is given when only very few items are left in a shop’s possession. In order to quickly dispose of the remaining merchandise, they set it at a price, irresistible to customers. Even when the merchandise is still plentiful, they are put on sale in order to have them cleared from the storage room. This provides room for new product that is coming.

In most cases, discount snowboards and other discount sports gear and sportswear are best bought in March. This is the time when sports shops give out huge discounts to dispose the remaining winter merchandise, and to get ready for spring sports equipment.

You can check online for shops that offer discounts. Even the sports shops at the nearest department store have this special event. Closure or Moving out sale is also a famous event.

It is a time when all products are sold at a very low price. Discount snowboard, snowboard gloves, snowboard boots and snowboard jackets are top sellers.

There are even discount snow helmets, goggles and snow apparel available. Other Sale events such as anniversary, Christmas, thanksgiving, graduation, father’s day and mother’s day are a good time to watch out for discounted sport equipment.

You will get the most of discounted merchandise when you buy in packages. For example, in snowboarding, you will need the appropriate apparel, footwear, and gear such as the helmet, goggles and gloves.

If your child has a friend who also loves snowboarding, you can make an agreement with the friend’s parents to split the package for snowboarding. If you have more than one child who loves this sport, you can have more savings when you buy two discount snowboards and other necessary gear.

A Primer for the Best Snowboarding Boots

June 21st, 2010 — 5:37pm

The snowboarding boots are the most important equipment in the sport. The boots serve as your connection to the snowboard itself; without a secured and comfortable link to your board, you can be exposed to all sorts of accidents and the chance of enjoying snowboarding is jeopardized. Therefore, choosing the right snowboarding boots for you is of utmost importance if you ever want that peak performance in this extreme sport.

In buying your snowboarding boots, you might deal with making a choice between a step-in and a strap-on snowboarding boot. Step-in boots have convenient mechanisms that lock your footing onto the snowboard. Strap-on boots, on the other hand, bind your footing onto the snowboard by using straps and are the classic and standard ones.

But no matter which type of snowboarding boots you plan to buy and irrespective of the amount of money you are willing to spend for your boots, the most important factor in choosing your snowboarding boots is the manner in which your feet fits inside them. Your snowboarding boots, unlike ordinary shoes, should last for a long time and therefore you have to choose what you think is the best and most comfortable pair for you.

Choosing the best pair of boots for you can be a challenge in itself. But the improved performance and the unparalleled experience of a perfect slide down snowy slopes is well worth your efforts to find the most comfortable snowboard boots that will meet your snowboarding needs. Read on for the inside story of finding the perfect pair of snowboarding boots.

Listen To Yourself And Yourself Alone

So what if your friend has an expensive pair of professional grade snowboarding boots? When you are buying boots avoid being influenced by other snowboarders’ choices. Most snowboarding boots look great on the outside but can be heavy and downright painful to wear; so never sacrifice comfort by going with what your friends like and tell you to buy. Your feet are unique and you alone can decide the kind of snowboarding boots that will work for you best.

Do Not Rush

Looking for the perfect snowboarding boots for you can take a chunk of your precious time. Avoid committing the folly of rushing thru your shopping for boots. Unlike ordinary footwear that can embody the form of your feet over time, snowboarding boots do not easily and conveniently mold into the unique shape of your feet. So you need to set aside ample time in choosing your boots before making the purchase.

Try out every pair for sizes. It is also a good practice to try the boots wearing the socks that you will use in snowboarding. If you found a pair that you think fits, try walking around in it. If they still feel comfortable after leaving the boots on for a few minutes, then you may have found your snowboarding boots.

Resist The Urge To Buy Bigger Boots

The problem with snowboarding boots is that they are harder and they seem inflexible unlike ordinary leather shoes. So some people tend to buy snowboarding boots that are a little oversized to give more room for the feet. Oversized boots can cause injuries like sprains and even bone fractures. If your snowboarding boots are oversized, try wearing thick socks to compensate for too much space inside your boots.

In buying snowboarding boots, always put in mind that comfort, while foremost on your list, should not eliminate your control and stability on the snowboard. These factors should be balanced in order for you to have safe and unforgettable snowboarding.

Snowboard Boots Bindings

June 7th, 2010 — 6:22pm

What is the deal with inexpensive snowboarding gear? Is it even worth buying inexpensive snowboarding gear? These are some questions that you could be asking yourself when shopping for new apparatus. Nobody wants to spend a huge amount shopping, but snowboarding in general is an expensive sport. You’ve got to have snowboard pants, a jacket, gloves, goggles, snowboard boots, bindings and a snowboard. Like I claimed snowboarding is an expensive sport, but there are methods to save some money buy buying inexpensive snowboarding gear.

Come visit us right here for more info on Snowboard Boots Bindings. http://snowboardingbindings.org

First of all lets quickly recognize the difference between cheap and expensive snowboarding gear. Materials are the sole difference, shapes and styles are commonly the same, but the pricey gear is formed with better materials and better materials are far more respondent and last longer.

SO…when and where is it o.k. To buy inexpensive snowboarding gear?
I’m able to tell you that buying an inexpensive snowboard is o.k. An inexpensive snowboard should cost somewhere between $250-$350 ( Going cheap on a snowboard doesn’t truly make such a massive difference unless you are dropping gigantic lines. Inexpensive snowboards are a lot softer which makes it easier to be told how to make turns if your a newb, and if your an intermediate rider making an attempt to improve by doing tricks having a softer board will help.
Inexpensive bindings will break easily, especially if the temperatures get cold.
buying Cheap Snowboard Boots is kind of tough to call because some folk will tell you never get inexpensive boots, but i say if you are only planning on snowboarding a number of times a year then it is o.k. To buy cheap snowboard boots.

As for your goggles, jacket, and gloves it is simple to save money as it’s not necessary to have the costliest. Just be aware of the weather conditions you’ll be riding in because you do not want cold wet hands. If you are riding in the northeast consider a mitten-style glove, they’re much warmer.
